The Utilization of Technology for Early Childhood Development and Health: Automatic Pause Insertion Applications in Screen Time
Screen time exposure in children is an unavoidable phenomenon amid the rapid growth of digital technology and the widespread use of gadgets in daily life. Early-childhood and school-age children are increasingly accustomed to watching video content for long durations without adequate breaks. This condition risks negatively affecting children's cognitive development, socio-emotional development, and physical health. The urgency of this research lies in children's habit of prolonged, uninterrupted viewing, which calls for an alternative strategy that is more adaptive, realistic, and easy to implement given children's current viewing habits. This research aims to develop an innovative approach through the automatic insertion of breaks into children's video playback as an intervention to interrupt continuous screen exposure. These breaks are designed to encourage children to pause momentarily from watching, thereby supporting optimal child development and health. This study uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach consisting of two stages: (1) needs analysis and design through a literature study of prior research on children's screen time, without a parent survey or expert consultation; and (2) development and release of a web-based application prototype named "Harmoni" equipped with configurable automatic break insertion, seamless resume to the pre-break position, and a bilingual interface. The output of this research is the Harmoni application prototype, which has been fully developed and deployed as a screen time management intervention model.
